How fit do I need to be?

You don't need to be super fit to start training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. In fact, BJJ is a great way to get fit. At Pitbull Jiu-Jitsu Academy, everyone is welcome on the mats regardless of their fitness level. We focus on technique, which is something anyone can do.

Do I need prior experience in martial arts?

Not at all. If you have already trained in another martial art, that's great, but prior experience in martial arts is not required.

What will I learn?

We will teach you the basics of self-defense, as well as the modern evolution of martial arts. You will practice a series of techniques from many different positions. You will also learn how to control resisting opponents on the ground and how to effectively apply submissions.

Do I need to be strong to train Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

The beautiful thing about BJJ is the core principle that a weaker and smaller person can defeat a stronger and heavier opponent using leverage and technique. Anyone with an open mind and a desire to learn can train BJJ.

Am I too old to start training BJJ?

It's never too late to start training BJJ. Our self-defense programs are designed to accommodate everyone. All students are encouraged to train to their own limits and can practice as much as they want.

What is the right age for children to start BJJ?

Every child is different. However, we believe that around the age of 5 is a good age to start a martial art like BJJ. Our children's program is designed for kids aged 4-13 and focuses on making self-defense and physical education fun. We use games for conditioning and skills to engage and challenge the children. The benefits go beyond the physical. They will also teach your children valuable life skills such as kindness, confidence, focus, discipline, teamwork, mental strength, and self-control.

What if I am currently injured?

Depending on the nature of your injury, there is a chance you can train around it. Talk to your instructor to discuss your options. Even if you have to sit out a few classes, we still strongly encourage you to come, watch, and learn.

What should I bring?

All you need for your first class is comfortable clothing. A fitted T-shirt or rash guard and shorts without pockets are preferred. For women, leggings and a top are fine. However, if you have a Jiu-Jitsu kimono or 'Gi,' feel free to wear it.

A water bottle and a small towel for drying off after class are also a good idea.

Do I need protective gear?

Some students choose to wear a mouthguard. However, that is entirely up to you.

Are students from other academies welcome?

100%. We are focused on community, not competition. So, everyone is welcome at Pitbull Jiu-Jitsu Academy.
